These are the sad times in which we live. (That’s just the page, now we’re not counting the 9 stylesheet files, the 12 Javascript files, or the 120 image files that make up the webpage as a whole.) After all (thought the fellow who wrote this parsing library), what madman would create a webpage where the HTML- just the HTML-would exceed 600K in size?!Ĭlearly, our man has never read SlateStarCodex. MAX_FILE_SIZE was set to a very generous 600 kilobytes. If a retrieved page is found to be larger than MAX_FILE_SIZE, parsing is not attempted. The library I use to parse a retrieved web page had a constant in it, MAX_FILE_SIZE (meant, no doubt, to prevent undue load on one’s web server, or hanging server processes, that might be caused by attempting to retrieve and parse a giant remote web page that some malicious person placed there as an attack). What was the problem? Two evils conspired to produce this glitch: lack of foresight and website bloat. There’s a small dent there to this day, although it would barely be visible if we hadn’t painted an arrow pointing to it. The deck nearby and the shield of the 40mm mount next to the turret were also sprayed with fragments, but none of the crew outside were injured. Two men inside the turret suffered minor wounds from shrapnel that entered through the pointer’s telescope. This hit obviously failed to pierce the armor 7 and merely destroyed the left gun pointer’s telescope, broke the glass covering the left ear of the turret rangefinder, and stripped away some of the weather/gas seal between the turret and the barbette. At 0940, Iowa received her first battle damage, a 6” hit on the side plate of Turret 2. For two hours on the morning of March 18th, Iowa poured fire into the island unopposed, before the Japanese coastal defense guns opened fire. Her next action came in mid-March, as Vice Admiral Willis A Lee, commander of the Fifth Fleet battle line, led Iowa and New Jersey on a bombardment mission to Mili Atoll. She escorted the first carrier raid on the Marianas a week later, which was uneventful for her, and a major success for the US as a whole. The rest of the sweep was uneventful, and Iowa rejoined the carrier force as it retired to Kwajalein.
